Title: Community Programs Coordinator
Classification: Exempt
Reports: Manager of Museum Art School and Deputy Director for Education and Interpretation
Job Summary:
The Community Programs Coordinator is an integral staff member of SDMA’s teaching and outreach team. The Coordinator works with two museum educators and the Manager of the Museum Art School and Outreach in teaching a variety of art programs in schools, community centers, and at SDMA to reach children, teens, families, and adults. Programs incorporate art history, studio art, and museum gallery experiences, connecting to both the permanent collections and special exhibitions at SDMA. The Coordinator must have the ability to work with underserved audiences or audiences new to SDMA and the ability to work with diverse audiences/multi-generational audiences where English is the second language. The goals of the position are to provide programs that are welcoming, create interest in art, and arouse creativity in children, teens, families and adults. Programs take place at the Museum Art School, at SDMA and off site.
Qualifications:
Education: B.A. or B.F.A. in Studio Art, Art Education, Museum Education, or Art History; M.A. or M.F.A. preferred. Five to seven years experience in teaching art and art-making with five years in an art museum/ teaching in gallery.
Knowledge: Pedagogical knowledge and Art History background preferred.
Abilities: Leadership in museum education. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. Detail oriented, patient, and flexible. Ability to work in culturally sensitive ways and respect diversity. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Skills: Strong teaching, presentation, and written and research skills, proven collaboration skills. Strong organizational and administrative skills including documentation and evaluation skills.
Other Requirements: A valid California Driver’s license, car with insurance and be willing to use it on the job. Must have a car and be able to drive it or SDMA’s vehicle daily.
Physical Demands:
- Some carrying and lifting up to 30 to 50 Pounds.
- Daily travel to other sites by car.
- Daily walking from SDMA to MAS (Museum Art School), which includes stairs. Daily walking to and from parking lots to/from community centers, schools, etc.
Work Environment:
- Work takes place outdoors (Family Festival) and at community centers or schools.
- Office space is shared with two to three other museum staff.
- Noise level ranges from quiet to moderately noisy.
