Family Festival:
Kimono as Art

November 16, Sunday
12:00–4:00 p.m.
SDMA, Timken, Mingei, and Japanese Friendship Garden
Free admission at all museums 12:00–4:00 p.m.
Free admission to the Japanese Friendship Garden
2:00–4:00 p.m.

Join SDMA, the Timken Museum of Art, Mingei International Museum, and the Japanese Friendship Garden for a free family festival in conjunction with Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota. Enjoy art activities and performances based on the artistic and cultural traditions of Japan, as well as programs and performances by local community organizations.

Explore Kimono as Art at both SDMA and the Timken with docent-led tours in English and Spanish, and view Shibui: The Subtle Beauty of Japanese Craft at Mingei.

Mingei will also host a bunraku-inspired puppet performance of the story The Crane Daughter, and the Timken will present musically accompanied storytelling that brings Japanese folktales to life. Other performances include traditional Japanese drumming and fan dancing, origami (paper folding), kiragami (paper cutting), and brush painting activities. Learn the art of wearing and folding kimono or watch a Japanese tea ceremony. Finally, help create a giant kimono for the closing event!
