“Spanish Missions in California and Manila: Restoration and Preservation in Modern Cities”

Dr. Jaime Laya, chair of the Philtrust Bank in the Philippines and former minister of education, culture, and sports, will speak about his involvement in the restoration of an 18th-century church in Manila and address the architecture of the church, its similarities to Spanish missions in California, and the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in modern cities.

The talk will be followed by a conversation between Dr. Laya and Dr. Peter Cowhey, Dean of the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), and Derrick R. Cartwright, SDMA Executive Director. RSVP by calling (858) 822-3103 or email cpe@ucsd.edu.
